  • Choosing Wichita State’s MVP a guarded decision

It’s not easy to determine Wichita State’s MVP. There are three candidates — point guard Fred VanVleet, shooting guard Ron Baker and forward Cleanthony Early — and a fourth, Tekele Cotton, who would be justified in making a claim.

Ultimately, though, the Shockers are about point guards. And they have been for a while now, starting with Clevin Hannah, then Joe Ragland, then Malcolm Armstead and now VanVleet, the captain of this 30-0 ship.

VanVleet might not be the flashiest player you’ve ever seen. He’s not a behind-the-back, between-the-legs, over-the-shoulder kind of point guard. He’s a two-hand chest pass kind of player in a flash-and-sizzle world. He’s a throwback to a time when being called a steady and heady point guard wasn’t an insult.

Tonight, I tried my own point System, and the small edge on paper did barely favor FVV, followed closely by Cle, and then closely followed by Baker. Tekele should get defensive player of the year in the Valley and 3G would get my vote for National Coach of the Year.

Which raises the questions, given some of the pettiness we have seen in years past in the MVC; "Could Marshall win National Coach of the Year but not win the MVC coach of the year", "Could Cleanthony be an All-American but not be MVC player of the year?" and "Could Tekele Cotton once again be lauded by players, coaches, and commenters in the NCAA as one of the best defensive stoppers they have ever seen but fail to make MVC defensive player of the year?". Sadly, it is at least conceivable that the answer to one or more of these questions could be YES.
